Unes belts walk-off homer for B-E win

Marisa Unes showed a flair for the dramatic Saturday in girls softball action for Brimfield-Elmwood.

The Lady Indians outfielder belted a walk-off, two-run home run on a 1-2 count to beat Havana, 6-4. Brooke Sumner had doubled to lead off the inning against Havana (5-2) and scored on Unes’ four-bagger. Sumner also scored in the bottom of the fifth inning after singling.

That made a winner of Maddie Hessing, who allowed four hits in seven innings, fanned six and walked three. Also collecting hits were Ella Florey (double), Kierra Johnson, Hessing and CJ Troxell.

On Monday, Johnson hit a three-run homer as part of a five-run sixth inning that lifted Brimfield (8-2) past West Central, 7-5. Sumner had three hits while Unes, Johnson and Troxell had two apiece.

Hessing allowed 10 hits in 7 innings.

On Tuesday, B-E beat Bushnell-Prairie City, 13-0, as Sumner pitched a shutout and Hessing homered.

Princeville
The Princes (5-5) topped Knoxville Tuesday, 7-5. Kinley McGinn was 3-for-3 with two RBI for Princeville, which also got a home run, double and three RBI from Mekaya Cihla. Bridget Gilroy got the win.

After bouncing back with a pair of lopsided wins on April 6 at Stark County, the Lady Princes (5-5) dropped two to Mercer County Saturday.

The first loss was 6-1, and Gilroy allowed seven hits in seven innings and fanned seven. Gilroy, Greta Dwyer, Sierra Stahl and Kinley McGinn singled for Princeville’s hits.

The second game was 14-3 in favor of Mercer County, which had 11 hits against Gilroy. Mekaya Cihla had a one-run home run for Princeville in the second inning, while Kiara Cihla and Elizabeth Sutherland also had a hit and RBI for the Lady Princes.

ROWVA-Williamsfield
The Lady Cougars (5-4) won a third straight Monday with a 4-1 victory at Peoria Christian. Kataleena Hunt’s two-run home run in the first inning was the difference, as she drove in Avery Rigg (double) with the winning runs.

Jenna Woodside also scored on an Ava Landon single in the third and Woodside scored again in the seventh on a groundout by Hunt.

Landon allowed seven hits in seven innings and fanned eight for the win.

On Tuesday, R-W split with Annawan-Wethersfield, winning 2-0 and falling 6-5.

On Saturday, R-W swept a home doubleheader vs. Galva, 15-5 and 16-5. Ashlyn Murdock drove in four runs and scored three times on two hits in the opener, while Madison Nelson went 3-for-4 and Hunt also had two hits.

Landon got the win, allowing five hits while fanning nine and issuing no walks in six innings.

R-W (3-3) tallied 15 in the first inning of the second game on singles by Murdock (two), Woodside, Landon and Whitney Godsil, walks by Woodside and Godsil, a groundout by Rigg, Izzy Nelson reaching on error and a double by Hunt.

Murdock led with three RBI and also got the pitching win, scattering eight hits in five innings and fanning four. All runs were unearned, as R-W committed five errors.

Farmington
Farmington (3-2) lost to Kewanee (8-0) on Saturday, 6-2. Holly Shriber took the loss, giving up eight hits in seven innings. Farmington managed 10 hits, with Emma Evans, Mackenzie Janson and Alysin Eichorn each going 2-for-3.
