Trees axed during city repair projects By JEFF LAMPEFor The Weekly Post ELMWOOD – Insurance costs and planting trees were two main topics of discussion during a brief meeting of the Elmwood City Council on May 15. As part of recent sidewalk-repair projects on Magnolia and Main streets, several trees located in the city right-of-way were cut down. Alderman Nathan Brunnelson said roots from the trees, some of them quite large, were causing problems with heaving of the sidewalks. Scott Perkins and Bobby Brown hope that leads to at least 16 new residents. The husband-and-wife team are the owners of Country Aire Senior Manor, a new independent-living facility along Illinois Route 180. The new owners purchased the building earlier this year for about $200,000 from the village, which received it last year by donation. By ANDY LATORAFor The Weekly Post BRIMFIELD – The Brimfield School Board’s monthly meeting coincided with the last day of school for the district’s student on May 20. “We’re out before Memorial Day so that’s always very good for everyone’s psyche,” Brimfield Superintendent Chad Jones said. Jones then provided a brief update on the progress of the district’s bus barn, where interior walls have been framed and mechanical and electrical rough-ins are being completed. Rambling through central Illinois, hoping tornadic activity is over for 2026. • • • There’s nothing like the threat of a tornado to bring neighbors together, standing outside as the storm hastily approaches and sirens wail. At least that was the case last Thursday in our Elmwood neighborhood. People you had not seen outside in months were clustered in front of their homes, looking to the northwest to witness what Mother Nature cooked up this time.
