Dec. 10 deadline set for Toulon sewer lift station

TOULON – After nearly a year of delays, Toulon’s lift station project is scheduled to begin construction this week.
The project was originally scheduled to have been completed early last spring, but now with a time extension, contractor Stark Excavating faces a Dec. 10 completion date. Stark Excavating was invited to attend Monday evening’s city council meeting, but declined to attend.
In other business Monday, the council voted to increase water and sewer rates with the next billing cycle. The ordinance was passed to increase the fees for water to $4 per 1,000 gallons with the base rate going from $20 to $25. Sewer rates will be raised 3 percent. Last month, Mayor Larry Hollis stated that the rates have not been raised in 14 years.
Only one bid was received for sidewalk replacement in three areas of Toulon and that contractor was Bob’s Concrete. Sidewalks targeted for replacement are in front of Lucy Dot’s on Washington Street and by the Mower’s residence a block to the north. Also, Vine Street is set for replacement across from City Hall. The third location is the sidewalk at Miller and Thomas Streets by the Gerber residence. Total cost of this project is $25,070.
The city council approved a landscape collection ordinance that provides residential pick-up of landscape waste for residents of Toulon with the following stipulations: landscape material should be placed in paper yard waste bags; branches, limbs, and logs may not exceed 8 feet in length and 2 inches in diameter; landscape waste must be placed on the curb and will be collected on a weekly basis between April 1-Oct. 31 each year, with pick-up on Mondays. Waste must be placed on the curb prior to 7 a.m. on the collection day; landscape waste is limited to what is generated at the residence being serviced.
The council also approved the final plat for Toulon’s new Dollar General store to be located at the intersection of Routes 17 and 91.
A bid of $1,700 from Saw-N-Logs to remove two trees, one by the Toulon Methodist Church and the other at South Miller Street and East Turner Avenue, was passed.
Approved was a credit card with a $1,000 limit for use by Toulon Police Chief Gary Bent and city employee Jake Streitmatter to be issued by a local bank.
Water meter quotes for the purchase of two meters for the Stark County Jail and Toulon’s Water Plant was approved for a total of $2,323.
The public hearing on the new water tower grant has been delayed until further notice by the state.
Two bids were received and tabled for the city’s Ford truck with a snowplow that is for sale. The city is going to list the truck on Facebook for sale to see what response is generated for a selling price.
