Brimfield sweeps Lewistown in volleyball

The Brimfield girls volleyball team swept Prairieland Conference rival Lewistown 25-15, 25-23 at home last Thursday.

“It’s always good to come out on top against a conference rival like Lewistown,” Brimfield Coach McKenna Weaver said.

Wins now gain extra importance as coaches were to submit their postseason seeding picks by noon today. Regionals start Oct. 23.

The Lady Indians (12-7) used a balanced attack that included six kills and 11 digs from Chloe Fabry, six kills from Lauren Wiesehan and 12 assists from Whitney Smith, who also served one ace.

Bailey Grunow and Anja Nelson each scored on one ace. Claire Gilles recorded one ace and two blocks. Layla Hersemann also defended with two blocks.

Elmwood – Elmwood (7-15) lost 25-7, 25-7 to Kewanee Wethersfield at home on Monday in non-conference action.

Wren Kellenberger had eight digs, followed by six digs from Samantha Centers. Mahala Mercer assisted on three scores. Raelyn McClain scored on two kills and defended with two blocks. Brooke Allen also blocked two. Gianna Ramirez added two kills for the game.

The Lady Trojans came up short last Thursday at home, 25-14, 25-10 at the hands of Prairieland opponent Knoxville.

Cheyenne Burge was Elmwood’s kills leader with four. Mercer tallied three kills, three blocks and five assists. Kellenberger had two aces, three assists and five digs. McClain blocked three. Cece Conklin recorded three digs. Centers also came up with three digs.

Farmington – Farmington (5-13) took Havana to three sets but came up short 24-26, 25-16, 13-25 in a Prairieland contest at home last Thursday.

Alayna Keefer scored six kills. Meaghan Carpenter defended with six blocks. Isabelle Nordwahl scored two aces. Madilyn Hanlin recorded nine assists. Claire Hanlin had 21 digs in the effort.

FHS fell to non-conference rival Mercer County 25-14, 25-8 on Sept. 26 at home. Izzy Lynn scored on four kills. Mariah Hayden blocked four. Keefer was busy with two ace serves, six digs and three assists. Madilyn Hanlin came up with six digs and three assists.

Princeville – The Lady Princes (11-14) lost in a hard-fought three-set match to Peoria Christian 25-27, 26-24, 21-24 at home last Thursday.
“This was another heartbreaker for us,” Princeville Coach Ashley Lauber said.

Brianna Brodie hit well, getting 12 kills. Claire Dearing came up with eight kills. Greta Dwyer assisted on 29 scores. Harper Francis blocked two and scored two aces. Sydney Kratzer also served two aces.

The Lady Princes fell in two close sets, 25-22, 25-23, at nonconference rival Knoxville on Sept. 27.

“It was a tough battle. Despite the loss our hitters were very powerful,” Lauber said.

Brodie had 12 kills. Dearing recorded seven kills and scored two aces. Dwyer was the assists leader with 25.

ROWVA-Williamsfield – ROWVA-Williamsfield (12-6) fell to Lincoln Trail Conference opponent Annawan 25-10, 25-9 on Sept. 27. Tori Trotter recorded seven digs, eight assists and two ace serves. Sawyer Secrist picked up seven kills.

R-W also dropped a non-conference contest at Henry on Sept. 26, 25-21, 25-19. Trotter dug seven off of the floor while also getting eight assists and two ace serves. Secrist scored on seven kills.
