Farmington home ‘total loss’ in Saturday blaze

A Saturday electrical fire left this home at 917 E. Fort St.in Farmington a “total loss” according to fire department officials. There were no injuries in the fire.

FARMINGTON – An afternoon fire on Fort Street here last Saturday was probably due to faulty wiring, according to officials, who said the house at 917 E. Fort is a total loss.

An adjacent property damaged when the fire spread is expected to be repaired.

No one was injured in the blaze, where Farmington fire fighters were assisted by first responders including Brimfield, Elmwood, Fulton County, Logan/Trivoli, Maquon and Elba/Salem in Yates City.

Fire fighters were on the scene until about 8:30 p.m., according to City Administrator Rollen Wright. “The residents smelled an electrical odor, opened a door and saw the fire,” Wright said. “They got out, and a police officer arrived and saw that it had spread to the house on the east and alerted the neighbor, who escaped.”

The residents living where the fire originated lost everything, Wright said, and will be assisted by the City. “They had no insurance and are living on disability,” Wright said. So “the City will pay for its demolition
as an unsafe structure, which we can do under City ordinance.

“We can’t just leave it the way it is,” he added
