Of things missed, squirrels & a wash song

Rambling through central Illinois, pondering critter genetics. At first, the stay-at-home edict didn’t bother me much. Having been deemed “essential” was a rare vote of confidence and meant we could put out our papers. And since riding a tractor to mow and move dirt fits social distancing guidelines, there was plenty to do once the paying job was over. But more and more often lately, I’ve noted things that are missing. … The fellowship of Sunday mass, even trading jabs with Bob Curran (don’t tell him). … Buying pie from somewhere other than a grocery store (store pie is never…

Area voters mirror state in results & low turnout

By BILL KNIGHTFor The Weekly Post Despite substantial increases in early voting and mail-in ballot requests, the turnout for the March 17 primary election was bad – probably due to voters’ reluctance to venture out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unofficial numbers indicate that turnout will be worse than 2012’s primary, when 23.2 percent of registered voters cast ballots. That year – with President Obama running unopposed and Republicans choosing between Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich – has the lowest turnout in more than 50 years. Matt Dietrich, public information officer with the Illinois State Board of…

Of praise, pets, yard work & a great game

Rambling through central Illinois, pondering a war vs. unseen germs. • • • Historically, when our country goes to war, deserved praise is showered on military members who put their lives on the line for our benefit. The war we face now, though, is so different. This time around, the warriors, in the trenches are medical staff fighting to cure the sick. The true heroes are the first responders who transport the sick … pharmacists who are there to make sure you get your meds … nursing home staffers … prison guards clerks at stores making sure you get enough…

Aralia cordata

A welcome Chinese import By RON DIETER For The Weekly Post “So, how long is this social distancing stuff supposed to go on? I need to know because my wife keeps trying to get back into the house.” It’s not often that I actually laugh out loud when I read the various memes posted on the internet, but this one just tickled my innards. Paul Gil, in an essay describing memes on Lifewire.com, writes “memes behave like a mass of infectious flu and cold viruses, traveling from person to person quickly through social media.” A particularly vivid description, given the…
