Elmwood’s Wake wins ICAC golf; Brimfield falls in IESA softball

CUBA – Tanner Wake of Elmwood shot an even-par round of 72 to win the ICAC Conference golf tournament Sept. 19 at Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills Country Club.

Wake finished seven strokes ahead of the runner-up in a busy final week of the regular season that also saw him shoot 77 to place seventh at the Sept. 23 Canton Boiler Invite at Wee-Ma-Tuk and win as medalist Sept. 21 at Lake Bracken with a 39.

Boys golfers headed into regional action on Wednesday, while the girls tee off in the regionals Thursday.

Also at the ICAC, Cade Farquer of ROWVA-Williamsfield was fourth after shooting 80 and leading his team to fifth overall at 352 strokes. Other scorers for R-W were Landon Hannam (87), Preston Lafary (90) and Mason Sornberger (95).

Elmwood was sixth at 367 and other scorers were Kuper Bolton and Anthony Guppy (both 97) and Quinton Johns (101).

Brimfield was seventh at 379 and was led by Drew Kieser’s 85. Other scorers were Nick Hainline (90), Dane Fagerburg (95) and Jackson Kappes (107).

The Brimfield girls were second at the ICAC with a score of 388 – eight behind Illini Bluffs. CJ Troxell was second with a 94, the same as her third-place teammate, Callie Lundell. Other scorers were Olivia Kappes and Nicole Detmers (both 100s).

Avery Rigg shot 94 to place fifth overall for R-W, which was third at 415. Other scorers were Kendra Bennett (98), Sidney Stiers (109) and Ava Landon (114). Elmwood’s girls placed fifth at 460 and were led by Maddie Conklin’s 105 and Addi Powers’ round of 107.

The R-W boys were fourth at the LTC Conference Tournament on Sept. 20 at Midland Golf Club in Kewanee with 371 strokes. United won with 344. Hannam led R-W with an 84,while Lafary shot 85, Farquer was at 100 and Sornberger carded a 102.

Brimfield’s boys and girls beat Elmwood at Maple Lane Country Club Sept. 18. Medalists were Conklin and Troxell (48) and Kaden Schatsiek of Brimfield (37).

• HS XC – The Princeville girls cross country team placed sixth last Saturday at the East Peoria XC Invitational. Bethany Sennett finished 16th in 20:42 to pace Princeville, whose other scoring runners were Alyvia Cowser (37th, 22:12), Sahara Streitmatter (43rd, 22:27), Montana Hoerr (60th, 23:19) and Katelyn Giffin (77th, 24:47).

The Princeville boys were 11th and were led by Joey Bosch’s 19th-place finish in 16:59. Winning time was 15:53. Other scoring runners for the Princes were Tucker Sennett (32nd, 17:33), Matthew Bowers (56th, 18:30), Collin Bowers (91st, 19:44) and Jacob Bosch (108th, 20:11).
Joey Bosch also won a Sept. 19 race at Princeville in 17:18 vs. runners from El Paso-Gridley, Lowpoint-Washburn-Roanoke-Benson and Farmington. Both Princeville teams placed first.

Princeville is at the Elmwood XC Invitational Saturday at Maple Lane CC. Varsity girls run at 10 a.m., varsity boys at 10:45 and frosh-soph at 9:30.

• IESA softball – The Brimfield junior high girls softball team lost its bid for a threepeat Saturday, dropping an IESA quarterfinal game to Cambridge, 2-1.

Cambridge (19-2) scored one run in the first and second innings and held Brimfield (16-5) to a single run in the second.

Teagan Drury had two hits in the game for Brimfield and scored the Lady Indians’ lone run. Audrey Updyke added a hit and an RBI and Lilli Owens had the other hit for Brimfield.

Cambridge managed four hits against Pyper Hicke, who fanned eight and issued two walks.

Cambridge lost in the title game to Pontiac St. Mary’s, 8-0.

• JH baseball – Brimfield’s junior high baseball team lost 4-2 in IESA sectional action at Carthage on Sept. 23. Brimfield (19-2) had won the regional 6-1 over Princeville on Sept. 18 at Galva.
