Car wreck claims life near Routes 40, 90

EDELSTEIN – A Peoria woman on Dec. 2 was killed in a rollover accident near the intersection of Illinois Routes 40 and 90 near Edelstein, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood.

Shannon Sommer-Affeldt, 36, was a backseat passenger in a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle accident about 11 p.m. on Dec. 2. Sommer-Affeldt attended Brimfield High School.

She was ejected from the vehicle and died instantly from multiple blunt-force-trauma injuries, Harwood said.

Sommer-Affeldt was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m.

According to Sheriff Brian Asbell, “the vehicle appeared to be traveling southbound on Rt. 40, ran off roadway, which ultimately led to vehicle rolling over.”

The driver was Gabriel Cook, 31, of Marquette Heights, who was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving while his license was revoked. A search warrant was obtained for chemical testing on Cook to determine if impairment played a role in the fatal crash. Passengers James Young, 34, of Peoria was transported to an area hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

Akron-Princeville Ambulance, Akron-Princeville Fire Department, and the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office all responded. The Sheriff’s office is continuing to investigate, and information on the driver and other passenger wasn’t disclosed.
