Bridge closing first of many

By BILL KNIGHT For The Weekly Post The Illinois Department of Transportation’s bridge replacement that started this week on Illinois Route 78 just south of Route 8 will disrupt traffic between Elmwood and Farmington for about six months, but the construction is years overdue. The Kickapoo Creek bridge is one of thousands of “structurally deficient” bridges in Illinois, according to builders, engineers and the Federal Highway Administration (FHA). In addition to replacing the bridge, the $1,080,000 project includes adjusting utilities and buying a strip of property, according to IDOT. “The land acquisition is for the State of Illinois right of…

IHSA has made no decision on canceling spring sports

By JEFF LAMPE Normally by now, we would be filling this page with season previews of local baseball, softball and track teams – along with news of cancellations due to weather. Instead, this story will focus on postponements and what the future may or may not bring for local high school and junior high athletics in the face of the novel COVID-19. Uncertainty rules, as noted by Elmwood Athletic Director Chuck Vermillion. “As of the moment, when we return to school, extracurricular activities will start back up,” Vermillion said. But that could change. So far, the Illinois High School Association has…

Of COVID-19 and ink-stained derrieres

By Jeff LampeRambling through central Illinois, battling a general malaise of COVID-19 inspired doom. – – – In tragic times, context sometimes helps me stay sane, even when thatcontext is grim and sanity proves fleeting. Consider that from 1939-1945 during World War II, a conservative average is that 27,000 people around the world died per day. As of Tuesday afternoon, COVID-19 had claimed 7,200 lives worldwide. So before we launch into too much “end of the world” talk, consider that mankind survived WW II, and many others. Also, consider that most days, about 7,452 people die in the U.S. and…

Local turnout low for primary election

By Jeff Lampe As far as local action in Tuesday’s primary election, you can sum things up quickly: turnout was low and not much of any great surprise happened. In Stark County, just 19.78 percent of voters visited an election booth, even though this is a presidential primary. COVID-19 concerns no doubt kept many home. Henry County saw just 18 percent turnout. Those who voted followed a statewide pattern in the presidential race, favoring current President Donald Trump (96 percent) among Republicans and former Vice President Joseph Biden on the Democrat side (59.1 percent). Mark C. Curran, Jr., topped a…
